Meta Announces Meta Horizon OS Which Will Ignite Innovation and Creativity Moving Forward

Meta’s focus on the metaverse remains steadfast, although it’s viewed as a longer-term endeavor rather than an immediate transformative trend. Meta acknowledges the skepticism surrounding the broader vision of the metaverse but remains undeterred in its internal focus on the project.

The company sees the increasing engagement of children under 15 in gaming worlds like Fortnite, Roblox, and Minecraft as laying the groundwork for the next stage of metaverse development. As these young users (who will eventually be in the workforce and use to using virtual tools) increasingly conduct their daily interactions through avatars and virtual environments, it sets a precedent for broader social norms, eventually extending to professional engagement and other interaction types.

According to Nicola Mendelsohn, Meta’s head of global business. Mendelsohn emphasized at the World Economic Forum in Davos that while there was significant hype surrounding the metaverse a couple of years ago, the realization of its full potential is expected to take about a decade. Despite current skepticism, Meta is ready to play the long game here and maintains its commitment to the project, aligning with its long-term goal of establishing the metaverse within the next ten years.

To stand firm on that commitment, Meta has announced the launch of Meta Horizon OS, a tool that the company believes will be leap forward in making mixed reality (XR) technology more accessible, versatile, and immersive than ever before. By opening up its operating system to third-party hardware manufacturers, Meta is not only expanding the XR ecosystem but also democratizing access to this transformative technology.

In a recent Instagram post, Mark Zuckerberg talk about the announcement saying, “Today we’re opening up Meta Horizon OS — our operating system powering Quest — so others can design more headsets in our ecosystem. Lenovo, Microsoft, and ASUS are some of our first partners, with more coming too. Looking forward to a new wave of headsets focused on productivity, entertainment, gaming, exercise, and more!”

The decision to open Meta Horizon OS to third-party hardware makers is driven by Meta’s vision of a more open and inclusive computing platform for the metaverse. This move will enable developers to leverage a diverse range of hardware, fostering innovation and creativity in the XR space.
